The MS in Linguistics is a research-based program that provides a deeper experience with the core theories and methods of Linguistics as well as the technological tools used in many areas of the field. Students can choose from one of our three Concentrations—i.e. Computational Linguistics, Teaching ESL, or Language Documentation—or, they may choose to assemble their elective hours into a tailored focus of their own choice. All students work with a committee of faculty members on a Qualifying Research Paper or Master’s thesis, which is a semester-long research project providing in-depth, hands on research experience.

Upon finishing the degree, students will have attained excellent writing and critical thinking skills, communication skills, complex problem-solving skills, experience in both quantitative and qualitative methods, and exposure to the complexities of both linguistic and cultural variation. With the skills acquired in this program, our graduates go on to a wide range of employment both in and out of the field, as well as top tier PhD programs in Linguistics and connected disciplines.

The MS is a STEM program, with CIP code 30.4801 for Linguistics and Computer Science.
