Developing an Annotated Corpus of Pakistani English as a Research Tool

With the advent of computers, significant changes have occurred in all the domains of
foreign language teaching and learning including lexicography, vocabulary building, language pedagogy, testing, etc. Especially in Applied Linguistics, technology has brought about various significant changes. Corpora, large electronically stored texts, have been compiled for various languages for native, non-native learners, researchers and teachers. They have improved the traditional orthodox mode of foreign language teaching and learning by providing maximum autonomy to the learners. Corpus Linguistics and the tools like Antconc, Wordsmith and many others have established their position in handling the challenges of foreign language with special focus on student centered approach to language learning that was not possible up to recent times without computers. The proposed research project is an endeavor in this regard to develop a general/reference corpus of Pakistani English of nearly 25 million words during the year 2023-24 to address the issues of learning, teaching and advance pedagogical research of English in Pakistan.  The proposed corpus of will also be annotated to make it a more powerful tool for linguistic research in Pakistan as a new variety of indigenous  Pakistani English is establishing  its position among the world Englishes.
